Orca VS Yeti – Background Information On Both Brands

ORCA (Outdoor Recreation Company of America) is an American company that has made a name for itself for high-performance products. This company is relatively new in the market, but it has established a strong presence. The advertisements for their coolers come with a promise of meeting customer expectations and looking at their ratings and reviews they actually achieve this.

Yeti was founded by the Seiders brothers in Austin, Texas. But although their product designs are done in America, their manufacturing plant is in China. Yeti boasts of being a pioneer in the cooler industry having created the first roto-moulded cooler in 2006.

These two companies have a neck and neck competition, with both of them coming up with inventive cooler designs and going into rotational moulding technology. Since the aim for both of them is to offer you the best coolers in terms of design and functionality, we will take you through each of the brands to make the decision-making process easier for you.

Ice Retention Capability

The ORCA ice chests have maintained its high quality for a long time perhaps due to the fact that the products are manufactured in America. The design of the ORCA coolers mimics that of YETI as both use the rotomolding technology. The ice chests have thick walls with no seams, which make them long-lasting.

But the ability of a cooler to retain ice is affected by a lot of things including whether your pre-cooled the icebox where you store it, the frequency of lid opening, the outside temperature, the contents of the cooler and the size of the ice you’re using among other things.

Both of these coolers have some great features that are similar. These include; easy-pour drainage spout, non-slip feet, thick rubber lid gasket and a tough interlocking hinge. But while the designs are reminiscent of each other, there are a few features in ORCA coolers that you will find missing in Yeti.

  • Cargo Pouch – every ORCA cooler has a mesh cargo pouch attached to its back, something that misses in Yeti’s. The cargo pouch can work as an excellent storage for your keys, phone or wallet.
  • Handles – ORCA iceboxes have handles featuring a tough, long-lasting nylon married to a rubber. The handle has a good grip because of the nylon and will hold up any weight without disappointment. YETI’s on the other hand have handles that feature a marine grade rope with a rubber.
  • Latches – ORCA’s have a whale tail type rubber latches. The rubber is thick and durable. This extra touch that makes the design of the ORCA stand out misses in YATI models.

Colours and Sizes

ORCA coolers come in 6 different sizes that range from 20 quarts capacity to 140. The small models also feature 6 different color choices, with the possibility of a colour combination on request. YETI’s on the other had come in 10 different that range from 20 quarts to 350 quarts. All the models also have 4 different colour combinations.

The choice of size for a cooler should depend on your need. If you are looking for an icebox for daytrips, say a picnic, then a YETI 20 or 26 will be a perfect option for you. On the other hand, if you will be using your coolers for extended periods like a fishing trip then a more versatile premium icebox in the 40-70 quart zone is a perfect choice.

Strength and Durability

Both YETI and ORCA are premium range iceboxes. In fact, they are the best coolers on the market. So there is really no question about their durability. Having said that, YETI takes coolers through a bear-proof test, which they have a high rating for according to the ICGC.

The Yeti coolers are designed with an allowance for a padlock in a small hole at the edge where the tub and lid touch each other perfectly. This makes these coolers more secure since a bear is not able to reach the contents of the icebox.

ORCA coolers are also considered bear-proof actually although they lack the certificate to prove it. In addition to the strength of the icebox, the only other thing that makes a cooler bear proof is a padlock.

Be ready to dig real deep into your pockets if what you’re looking for is a quality icebox with a rotomolding feature. YETI’s have a reputation for the high prices, which has made many people shy off from their coolers. Folks who buy YETI actually do so because they are motivated by the marketing and the reputation. ORCAs, on the other hand, are more affordable. Since their quality and ice retention can almost be matched with that of Yeti.

Terms and Warranty

YETI products come with a 60-day exchange policy in case you change your mind on the size or colour. On top of this, they have a 30-day satisfaction guarantee period, where you can take back your product if you feel it doesn’t meet your expectations. Lastly, all YETI products have a 5-year limited warranty back-up which is valid for any workmanship or manufacturers defects that you may experience within this time.

By contrast, ORCA offers a lifetime warranty against workmanship or manufacturers defects for all their products. The only requirement for this warranty to be valid is that you should have bought it from an online retailer like Amazon or a registered dealer. The ice cooler should also have been under normal use for ORCA to repair or replace it. There are exceptions that will need a fine print, but the customer care personnel at ORCA is friendly and will help you through the process.

Generally, there are very mild differences between rotomolded ice coolers. However, if you scrutinize issues like the company and reputation, then you will be able to choose one (ORCA) since it’s made in the US while YETI is made in China. We can’t give a definite winner for the debate of Orca vs. Yeti, but hopefully, you will make the best decision from the information we have given on them.

We will be happy to hear your thoughts
